How to wear white, all year

Seasonless ways to keep a white wardrobe in rotation from January to December.

The idea that white belongs to summer comes from fabric, not from colour. A sheer cotton reads as July because it behaves like July. Change the weight and the same shade reads as November.

The simplest way to carry white through the year is to let texture do the seasonal work: poplin and linen when the light is high, brushed alpaca, double-face wool and heavy rib when it drops.

Work in tones, not in contrasts

Ivory, bone, chalk, oat and stone sit close enough to read as one idea and far enough apart to give an outfit depth. Layering two or three of them is more interesting than pairing a single white with black.

If an outfit feels flat, the fix is usually another texture rather than another colour — a ribbed knit under a soft-shouldered blazer, a silk skirt against brushed wool.

Let one piece set the line

Decide which piece is doing the talking — a trench with a defined belt, a column dress, a wide-leg trouser — and keep everything else quiet around it. Volume reads as intention when it appears once, and as noise when it appears three times.

Keep it honest

White shows wear, and that is part of the agreement. Treat marks quickly, wash cool, dry flat and away from direct sun, and let the fabric relax into its own shape rather than trying to keep it looking new.
