Building a small wardrobe
Fewer pieces, chosen so that almost everything works with almost everything.

Most wardrobes are large and still difficult to dress from, because the pieces were chosen one at a time, each against a different idea. A small wardrobe works when every piece was chosen against the same one.
Start with the two silhouettes you actually wear
Not the ones you admire — the ones you reach for on an ordinary Tuesday. For most people it is a relaxed top with a long trouser, and a single easy dress. Everything else is built around those two shapes.
Hold the palette
Working within ivory, bone, chalk, oat and stone means any top meets any trouser. The discipline is in the colour, not in the number of pieces, and it is what makes a twelve-piece wardrobe feel larger than it is.
Buy slowly, replace rarely
A piece that is cut well, in a fibre that ages well, stays in rotation for years. When something does wear out, replace it with the same shape rather than a new idea — the wardrobe stays coherent, and dressing stays quick.
